Centralized industrialization of pork in Europe and America contributes to the global spread of Salmonella enterica

Salmonella enterica, a food-borne infection, is linked to human activities, particularly animal husbandry. The pig industry’s advancements in intensive farming and transportation have significantly impacted the evolution of zoonotic pathogens like S. enterica. A study on nine pig-enriched S. enterica populations found most changes to be due to the modern pig industry. All pig-enriched salmonellae experienced host transfers or population expansions, with pigs and pork being the main sources of transmission.
